CLASH

Clash Music is an independent music media group that produce both print and digital media through Clash Magazine and ClashMusic.com. They predominantly focus on music from the Indie, Rock and Pop genres and often feature new break out artists in their publications alongside more established artists. Clash Music utilises both their media platforms to publish news, reviews and artist features with an image gallery and forums exclusive to the website. Their magazine is published once a month and the website is updated on a regular basis.
The magazine is of a peculiar layout to reflect its target audience and the genres it represents. Its front covers seem to heavily feature either; bright colours and warped images with odd layouts or blander colour schemes with striking images in the centre with bold text. Either way the magazine knows how to stand out to its target audience ; young adults with an interest in the bold and quirky, which is the target audience and genre I am looking to produce my magazine for.

This cover from the June 2014 issue features artist Lana Del Rey, only one image is on the cover, a common occurrence with this particular magazine. The colour scheme heavily features greens, golds and blues with a white bold title at the top in the centre, the image does not at all interfere with the title in anyway as the title is in front of it in a bold large font in bright white to contrast with the softer colours of the image making the name of the magazine obvious to prospective buyers. Little text is featured, save for a small section detailing names of artists that will be in the magazine written in small white font to the left side of the page. The name of the cover artist is printed at the bottom in large bold 3D font on a tilt, with a catch on line written in the same small white font as before underneath. The image itself is of cover artist Lana Del Rey dressed in a baby blue fur scarf led down on the grass, her nails are painted red and mixed with the blue of the scarf alludes to the title of the magazine “The American Dream Issue” The image has a golden hue to it and her skin seems to be glowing in the same colour, like the sun is shining on her, supported by her closed eyes and her hands held up to her face to perhaps shield her from the sun. The shot is taken from a straight angle with her in the centre.

This cover features artist M.I.A., again the image is the only one to feature on the cover. Its colour scheme is mostly bold colour orientated with reds, blues and yellows taking centrefold. The image itself is of a very psychedelic nature and has been photoshopped heavily to distort and pixilate her image, an odd use of photoshop compared to the more traditional use of it to beautify individuals, here it is instead used to add pixels and odd glows of colour both behind her head in a neon yellow, as though she is emitting the colour herself, and a rich red that obscures the bottom half of the image, almost looking like red water. The artist is shot from a straight angle in direct address with the camera. On this cover the title is in the same white bold font at the top centre of the page, but instead of being in front of the image, it is this time slotted behind the artists head. The cover again features little text save for the names of featuring artists in the same small white font and the name of the cover artist in 3D white font alongside a short catch on line

Clash Magazine Out Now With DJ Shadow

This double page spread features artist Mykki Blanco and an accompanying interview. The entire left hand side of the spread is dedicated to a photo of him in medium close up. The image is taken front straight on and the model is in direct address with the camera. The right hand side of the page has the interview on and is written in a small black front in three columns. The title of the interview is written in a larger different black font and the artists name is written underneath in a bold font.
